Healthy Teeth and A Great Smile – 5 Resolutions to get you there!

New Year’s resolutions are so overrated. With a little effort you can not only make a New Year’s resolution that can be accomplished, but will also affect you for a long time.

I suggest you make your teeth your focus! Here are five simple things you can do to help ensure a great smile and healthy teeth and gums

#1. Eat well. Make it a habit to eat fruits and vegetables as often as you can. Your immune system does not take well to poor nutrition, and this can have a detrimental effect on teeth and gums and well as the rest of your body. Fight bacteria and inflammation with antioxidants and nutrients found in legumes, fruits, vegetables and nuts. Eating crisp vegetables and fruits like apples, celery and carrots also help remove plaque and keep your breath fresh.

#2. Stop all tobacco use. Surely you have heard all the arguments so we do not need to rehash all that here. Who wants stained teeth, increased chance of gum disease, mouth and throat cancers, gum recession or more cavities? Even smokeless tobacco increases risk. Time to stop! Did you know that tobacco users are twice as likely to lose their teeth as nonsmokers?

#3. Limit alcohol intake. We are talking excessive alcohol combined with smoking. American Academy of Dentistry studies have shown that poor dietary intake combined with heavy smoking and excessive alcohol use leads to periodontal disease and gum pocketing.

#4. Here is an easy one. Brush your teeth twice each day and floss at least once daily. Our goal is to remove the plaque that builds up on our teeth. Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that must be removed to prevent teeth decay. Floss is important as it is the only way to remove the plaque from between your teeth. And between your teeth is where the problems begin!

#5. Get regular checkups! See your dentist twice a year to maintain great gum and teeth health to help prevent any major, expensive issues.

Make these resolutions today and create strong habits to keep your smile bright and your teeth and mouth healthy!
