A major concern for dentists is gingivitis.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums due to active bacterial infections. If gingivitis goes untreated, it can become a much worse disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis is a deep bacterial infection. It can lead to gum loss, tooth loss, and even bone loss. If periodontitis continues to be untreated, the bacterial infection can enter the blood stream and attack the heart causing endocarditis, an infection of the heart tissue. Gingivitis is a serious disease which needs to be treated. It can be easily prevented with flossing once daily as well as brushing twice daily.
