Wisdom teeth seem like something to make you wiser, but they might cause serious oral health issues.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are referred to as wisdom teeth because they are the last teeth to come into one’s mouth.  Wisdom teeth are normally removed by an oral surgeon because they can cause serious oral health problems.  These problems include gum disease, cysts, and damage to existing, healthy teeth.  Dentists will watch for wisdom teeth to develop in teens, and then tell them what the best options are for one’s individual case.
